A rare deep-sea visitor has made an appearance off the coast of Sidon! Local fishermen were surprised to haul in a John Dory (Zeus faber), a peculiar and rarely seen fish known for its flat, disc-like body, tall spiny fins, and distinctive dark circular spot on each side of its body.
📸 The John Dory is typically a deep-water predator, roaming the depths of the Mediterranean in search of small fish and squid. Its eerie eye spot helps confuse predators and mesmerize prey, while its sideways body profile allows it to ambush from the shadows.
Though occasionally caught in deeper trawl nets, spotting one so close to Lebanon’s coast is a special moment for marine observers—and a reminder of the rich, often unseen biodiversity swimming just off our shores.
🌊 This sighting adds to growing evidence that Lebanon’s marine ecosystem still holds incredible surprises. But without better protection, many of these species remain vulnerable to pollution, overfishing, and habitat loss.
