In a rare and exciting moment for Lebanon’s marine community, a nudibranch — one of the ocean’s most colorful and delicate creatures — was recently spotted by divers near the AUB Wall, also known as the AUB Canyon. This vibrant sea slug was found navigating the coral-covered crevices at the start of the dramatic underwater drop-off that defines this site — where the seabed plummets from 25 to over 300 meters.

 A Call to Action

Lebanon’s coast hides astonishing biodiversity just beneath the surface. This nudibranch is a reminder that even in the midst of urban chaos, life thrives — if we let it.

✔️ Support marine reserves like the nearby Tyre Coast Nature Reserve and Hima Mansouri
✔️ Call for enforcement of marine pollution laws
✔️ Respect the sea as a living system, not a dumping ground

Let’s make sure the next diver, scientist, or student exploring the AUB Canyon can still find these tiny jewels of the sea. ✨

Frequently Asked Questions

Nudibranchs are shell-less marine gastropods known for their psychedelic colors, intricate forms, and almost alien elegance. They may be tiny — often no more than a few centimeters — but their ecological importance is massive. These underwater gems are bioindicators of healthy, biodiverse reef environments.

The AUB Wall is one of Beirut’s most iconic diving locations. Its steep underwater cliffs and rich coral formations host a wide range of marine life — from moray eels and octopus to rare nudibranchs. A sighting here is especially meaningful:

🔹 Depth Meets Biodiversity: The site’s unique structure supports both shallow and deep-water ecosystems.
🔹 Urban Biodiversity: Located in the heart of the capital, this thriving marine life offers hope in an otherwise urbanized coastline.
🔹 Scientific Significance: As an area adjacent to a major university, it’s a natural lab for marine research and education.

Sensitive Indicators: Their presence reflects the cleanliness and stability of the underwater environment.

Food Web Role: They feed on sponges, hydroids, and even toxic prey — playing a balancing role in the ecosystem.

Pharmaceutical Promise: Many species contain compounds that are being studied for future medical applications.
